Bucharest Green Paths

Cities globally are prioritizing pedestrians and cyclists over cars with unique urban planning. Bucharest Green Paths project aims to convert underused central spaces into green pedestrian networks. Gheorghe Cantacuzino Square, linking Ioanid and Grădina Icoanei parks, is central to this, featuring multifunctional wooden decks for socializing and enhancing pathways.

Gheorghe Cantacuzino Square is the core of the intervention, connecting the parks Ioanid, Grădina Icoanei and Grădina Universitarilor. The square is situated at the intersection of the “Green Path” axes (represented in dark green above) and several important neighborhood streets. As a threshold between the city and nature, the square should become both a meeting point, as well as a distribution hub.

The proposed urban furniture includes 40 cm high wooden deck surfaces. These are multifunctional, creating spaces for socializing, relaxation, and sports. At the same time, the deck surfaces define the square’s space, emphasize pedestrian pathways, and create separations and height differences between street level and pedestrian areas.
