Welcome to our interactive map, where you can journey through the rich and evolving history of our city, one photograph at a time. This web application allows you to explore historic photographs taken from different eras of central Bucharest, showcasing how the urban landscape has transformed over the decades.
From the vibrant pre-war streets to the architectural growth of the interwar period, and the post-war reconstruction, these photos provide a window into the past. Each marker represents a moment frozen in time, and by clicking on them, you can compare what once was to what now stands in its place.
Navigating the Map
- Panning: Click and drag the map to move around.
- Zooming: Use the scroll wheel on your mouse or the zoom controls (+/-) on the map interface to zoom in or out.
Switching Between Maps
- Map Layer Switcher: Use the layer switcher to switch between the 1927 historical map and the current map of the city.
Viewing Historical Photo Markers
- Marker Arrows: The arrow on each marker represents the direction in which the historical photo was taken. You can use this to orient yourself when viewing the image.
- Color-Coding of Markers:
- Dark Blue Markers: Photos taken before the war.
- Middle Blue Markers: Photos taken during the interwar period.
- Light Blue Markers: Photos taken post-war.
- Hover Over Markers: Hovering over a marker will display a small preview of the historical photo.
- Click Markers: Click on a marker to view a larger version of the photo and its details (such as source link) in the right half of the map.
